After a couple years in the industry I feel like it’s time to look back and reflect on ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’. While I couldn’t say everything’s been a perfect picture I can certainly confirm that I’ve learn throughout all that stages of growth and continue to learn daily. Just so we’re on the same page I’ll give you the 500 mile view of my history as it is to date.

The Past

I grew up in lovely–sunny (West) Sacramento, where all I knew was wheat fields, industrial land and endless amounts of pavement. Most of my childhood was complaining how I wanted to be older so I could do whatever my sisters were doing. I was always one of those jealous kids, altho I never voiced it… I was. I was however extremely spoiled by my real father – which was short lived due to certain ‘substances’ and cause my little life to quickly spin out of control. One of my earliest memories was being wrapped up in my ‘birth blanket’ while my father heated up the car to drive me to my mothers. It was the typical… “okay, you watch him for 3 days and I’ll take the other 3 – switching sunday’s”. It seem’s extremely trivia now and wondered why I even remember such a faint memory. To some extent It defined who I am today.

Behind the curtain’s their were harsh custody battles going on between my parents. I figured my mom moved on pretty quick – altho she never really explained the terms and what had happened. She was always extremely concerned about ‘us’ and never wanted to hurt me and my sisters in any way – mentally or physically. On the other side was my ‘real father’, who was basically a jesus / nascar loving freak. He taught me about having fun and loving everything you were passionate about, no matter what the majority or minority thought about it. We had a race car in our backyard that would occasionally be painted to symbolize his return to racing…. which at one part of his life was all he knew. We had photo’s everywhere in the house of his first car he’d race at the “Sacramento Speedway” which was often visited to see ‘my favorite’ soap and water races (it’s a freaking blast to watch, if only Nascar got the memo).

I had so many friends growing up near that house – I had every game console imaginable and my dad always offered to take the ‘kids’ out to a race. Imagine: 7 wild, sugar-hyped kids that all wanted more popcorn or candy…. oh, and a t-shirt so we could get it signed by our favorite race car driver. How’d he not go broke sooner is my question… It was beyond perfect times for me as a kid, I had no idea what it all meant. I just knew every moment with him wasn’t something I would trade for the world. Why’d it all change I frequently asked myself? How come the house is getting dirtier (my dad was a clean freak also), and why was he always in some kind of ‘trouble’ whether at work, family or neighborhood drama. There was a point when I knew what the problem was…. but I was wrong. My mom (love her w/ all my heart), is a alcoholic – including my step-father who has been extremely supportive and I honestly owe him more than I could ever describe in words… or in person.

The trouble wasn’t beer, marijuana or even coke… which all seem like a norm ‘these’ days. It was even harsher – it never made sense till the day I put ‘two and two’ together after my sister (Amy) sat me down and told me to watch K.I.D.S., which was freaking mind blowing at the age 13. Thou they didn’t have ‘harsh’ drugs it made me think of all the what-if’s, things I never knew and how ignorant I was (and still am). I remember a scene in K.I.D.S. were a group of friends decide to ‘drop’ and wondered why dancing and blurry visions were happening. It dawned on me days later after I discovered a collection of my sisters Marilyn Manson VHS’s where he would clearly be taking substances then going on rage fits. My sisters lived with my mom – cause they basically had the same situation with their father… but he was gone, and they never had the opportunity to confront him (which I was jealous of).

So after spending a couple days with my mom and returning to my dad’s – I progressively notice the change of environment and all the people coming in and out, in and out. I was so tuned into my games that half the time I didn’t care. But one day, everything changed – and I have the scar to prove it.

It was my 13th birthday – September 29th 19__. I always had birthday parties that lasted weeks… not days. I don’t know if this was something associated to my ‘mexican’ heritage, but it was something I was quite use to.

Vegetarian Cyclist Nutrition

The average person has about the same amount of iron in their body as a large rusty nail. It’s purpose in the body is to help with the formation of red blood cells that are used to transport oxygen to a cyclists hard working muscles. A deficiency of iron could lead to anemia and the associated symptoms of tiredness and fatigue. In athletes where the risks of over training are high (such as in cycling) it is vitally important to maintain high levels of iron in order to maintain performance.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency in Cyclists

Symptoms of iron deficiency are not unique to the condition and can easily be mistaken for general states of tiredness. To the cyclist however, many of the symptoms can simply be diagnosed as over training when in fact a deficiency can be a cause of the symptoms. Symptoms of iron deficiency include:

Fatigue,Weakness, Brittle Nails, Irritability, Paleness of colour in the face/tongue, Pica (a strange craving for mineral rich non food substances such as dust or sand)

Vegetarians and iron

Iron is one of the most difficult minerals for our bodies to breakdown and absorb. In addition endurance athletes such as cyclists lose iron during exercise and therefore need to ensure iron intake is high to maintain the correct levels. Add to this that vegetarians generally have a lower iron intake because of their diet (see below) and it is easy to see why cyclists with vegetarian diets need to pay particular attention to their iron intake to avoid an iron deficiency.

Foods that are rich in iron

Most mild iron deficiencies in cyclists can be corrected by changes in diet that result in an increase in the consumption of iron rich foods. Generally foods contain two types of iron:

Heme iron sources are usually found in meats and are much more easily broken down and absorbed by the body than non-heme iron that is usually found in vegetables and grains. The foods listed below have high iron content;

Lean red meats, chicken, turkey, Fish (eaten by some vegetarians), Eggs, Beans (fresh or baked), lentils, chick peas, Nuts, Fortified breakfast cereals, Brown Rice, Tofu, Wholewheat bread, Leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli, Dried fruit such as apricots, prunes, raisins, Avocado

Iron Absorption

Most vegetarian diets do not contain as much iron as a non-veg one. The interesting thing about iron as mentioned above is that the body finds it very hard to absorb. Vitamin C has been found to be great at helping the body absorb iron. Foods particularly rich in vitamin C such as oranges, kiwi, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, peppers and orange juice can massively increase the amount of iron you can absorb. Therefore if you are a vegetarian be sure to make sure you include these types of foods in your diet.

On the flip side tea has been found to impede iron absorption so again try to avoid drinking tea with or immediately after your meals.

Iron Supplements

Iron supplements are usually not required unless you have very severe iron defficiency. Too much iron can be very bad for the body and so most doctors recommend treating any deficiencies purely through the adaption of diet.

Yesterday I went for my first run through Golden Gate Park which was wonderful and refreshing. I’ve always ran thou the city or somewhere surrounded by cement and cars. The park is so clean and open -- so much to look at. I ran pass the tea house, rose garden, a art museum and to top it off a waterfall. I mean how many people get that opportunity! It’s kinda insane to think I have been able to (in baby steps) move from flat broke in Sacramento to a somewhat stable and finically sound San Franciscan.
